Friday Focus – Ceasefire Debate & Proportionality
This week’s edition of Friday Focus examines what we have learned in recent days about Israel’s war on Hamas and the international community’s response. Janice and Rudyard’s discussion begins with the growing calls for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. Is this a realistic response to the current humanitarian crisis that is underway in Gaza? Why is it unlikely that either side in the war is likely to accept a ceasefire at this point? The remainder of the program discusses the concept of proportionality in war. What does it mean? How is it adjudicated? And, why does the media seem to continue to confuse the doctrine of proportionality in international law with the respective civilian casualty numbers in Israel and Gaza?
