Friday Focus: Trump cancels trade talks with Canada and targets Russia with sanctions
Rudyard and Janice react to Trump’s stunning decision to cancel trade talks with Canada in response to Doug Ford’s anti-tariff ad. This comes as negotiations were reportedly going very well, with a new deal expected to be signed soon. Is this all a ploy by the U.S. President to extract more concessions from Canada? The takeaway from this – and so many other unhinged Trump moments – is that you simply cannot trust this President’s word. In the second half of the show Rudyard and Janice unpack Trump’s decision to cancel a meeting with Vladimir Putin and put sanctions on Russia’s two largest oil companies. The U.S. President is learning that his personal relationships will not advance a ceasefire deal. Can Donald Trump convince Xi Jinping at their meeting next week to stop buying Russian oil in an effort to bring Putin to the negotiating table? Are the BRICS as united against America as the West believes this bloc to be? Among all the uncertainty at this moment, one thing does not lend itself to debate: Donald Trump has done real structural damage to America’s relationships with its allies and the world is becoming more unstable as a result.
